I’m just gonna quickly throw out there that this is a collection of habits that I fail to do every single day. Sometimes it’s all and sometimes it’s none, but I do know that these work and can be applied to anyone’s life. Some of these things may not work for you and if they don’t I want to hear what does!
With that in mind, here are 5 things that I think joyful people try to do everyday!
1.They have a thankful mindset.
This may sound voluntary if you’re an overall optimistic person, but I don’t think it is. I’m super optimistic, but I didn’t always apply this and especially didn’t naturally just do this. Just like any habit – this has to be learned and applied often. Start your day with thanks. Be thankful for waking up that day. Be thankful for a healthy body. Be thankful for a job to go to. Be thankful for fresh coffee to make. Be thankful for a car that works. See how simple that is? If this is something you want to do, start by saying these things out loud. yes, out loud. If your signif or a friend says that’s odd, then just SAY THANK YOU. Just kidding – that’s too sassy. Just keep on thankin’ away.
2.They do something for someone else.
Joyful people want to create other joyful people. This can most easily be done with a tiny act of kindness. A simple compliment to a stranger, going out of your way to hold the door for someone, sending a Starbucks gift card to a friend. I’d be pumped for any of these things! I think that people who regularly volunteer or mentor or donate their time in any way for others are generally more joyful, happy humans.
3.They make some kind of effort towards their health.
HEAR ME OUT BEFORE YOU GET MAD! Eeeek. I am NOT implying that you have to look any kind of way to be joyful – definitely not. I do know that our bodies were made for work. We were created to do things for others and with others. Being healthy looks and feels different for everyone and that’s beautiful. This habit could mean anything from taking good care of your skin or drinking a smoothie instead of a frappucino. FYI – Mocha Light Frappucinos from Starbs are only 100 calories in a tall. You’re welcome.
Every body deserves respect and deserves to work at it’s best! This could mean anything from working out everyday, drinking more water, or denying things that harm your body. Trust me, every little effort counts. The way your body feels will 100% affect your spirit.
4.They surround themselves with joyful people.
Isn’t it just hard being around a bunch of Negative Nancy’s all the time? First of all, don’t be one of those people y’all. (This doesn’t include realists obviously – I respect y’all and need you to bring me down to earth). Second of all, don’t hang with them! Overtime they will bring you down. Negative people who see very little reason to be thankful are really influential. Even if they’re funny or fun to be around – choose the joyful ones.
Don’t cut out people if you don’t need to, but try to surround yourself with joyful people when it matters. Remember, joyful people don’t always equal happy people. You can have joy even if life is giving you the absolute hardest time. Actually, we’re supposed to choose joy during every circumstance – but WOW that’s hard.
5.They seek the Source of joy.
I may lose some people with this one, but true joy comes from the Lord.
“I pray that God, the Source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”
God gives us joy, just like He gives us strength and peace. Every good thing from the Lord and tough circumstance that life throws at us should all be considered joy.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds”
Doesn’t this feel impossible though? My human response wants to be angry, wants to blame, and wants to take it out on people close to me. How cool if our first response was, “Okay God, honestly this is horrible and feels big, but I’m giving it to you and I’m asking for joy.”
Something to work towards, right?
Joy seems simple, it seems involuntary, but I think it deserves a deeper look. Let’s start that with these 5 things today.
I’d love to hear other things that you’ve tried.
