Humility is honestly pretty hard. We’re all selfish and miss the mark with humility on occasion. We have to battle our natural instinct to choose ourselves and that can be really tough when our priorities are messed up. Let’s take a step back and look at 6 ways to cultivate humility in our everyday lives.
PRAYER + COMMUNITY: I’ve honestly noticed that when I’m in regular and meaningful conversation with God that I’m more likely to serve and think of others. My perspective of myself changes because I’m constantly hearing from God through prayer and reading His word. Choosing others just becomes a byproduct of choosing God. When you take the next step and actually choose to pray for humility, God will not let you down – He’s gonna give you opportunities to be selfless and he’s going to show you the beautiful results. Then when you get your people involved – the people who love you and lead you towards the Lord – you’re going to be amazed at the impact of humility.
GOING BACK TO BASICS: AKA the Gospel. We were lost. God sent us His son, Jesus, to earth. Jesus died on the cross so that we could live freely forever with Him. We deserved to die and God showed the ultimate act of love. Now we are supposed to dedicate our lives to Him in the service of others. DON’T OVERCOMPLICATE IT. Your life is a gift so go tell others about it and when you can’t physically tell them, show them through service. Don’t get caught up in how YOU view them – how does GOD view them? Show love. Be kind. Have respect for everyone. Get back to the basics and use that focus to guide you throughout every single day.
SERVICE: Ding Ding – an obvious one! Obvious, but something most of us could probably do more of. Think of how you’re literally and physically serving people in your life. Are you volunteering somewhere? Do you have a family member or neighbor that needs some extra help? Do you pick up extra shifts to help out a coworker? Do you give little gifts to encourage a friend having a tough time? Do you send sweet texts to offer help or prayer to your community? How are you serving? If the answer is that you’re not, sister you need to get to work. No one is too busy for service. Do you need a place to start? A great way to find areas to serve is through your local church!
“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh ; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” Galatians 5:13
PRIORITIZING GRATITUDE + JOY: When you make a regular habit of thanking God, it’s really hard to not be grateful which makes it tough to not be joyful. By being in a real and intimate relationship with the Lord, you can’t help but thank Him. By making God a priority, He’ll change your heart and have you make others a priority. There are forsure going to be moments when we react poorly or have a bad attitude, but if we are already in the habit of gratitude, the lag time between crankiness and joy gets shorter and shorter. Instead of having cranky days and weeks, you’ll begin to just have cranky moments and move on. This isn’t a heart change that happens overnight typically, but it’s a change that will dramatically improve your life. I don’t know if you’re the type that needs lipstick reminders on the mirror, daily texts from your community, or a worship jam in the morning, but find a method that reminds you to pause and choose gratitude and joy every single day.
“Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:20
BRING DEPENDANT ON GOD: does anyone else think of this song? LOL I wish I didn’t. Our society tells you to be independant and do everything yourself. It tells you that you don’t need anyone and that you can’t trust anyone. That attitude might help you climb a few steps in the corporate ladder, but it won’t leave you satisfied. It won’t bring you the gratitude and joy we mentioned above. It won’t bring you genuine community who love you and care for you. It also won’t help you fulfill the purpose and plan God has already laid out for you. His plan, by the way, is far greater than any career or dream life you can imagine. I know you’ve heard that before, but God really does have you covered.
GETTING TO WORK: It couldn’t be more simple. Take action. Get busy. Think of others. Relinquish some of your free time. Watch one less episode of something. Wake up 30 minutes earlier. Just get to work, then you won’t have time to think about yourself.
Change your life today by choosing God and choosing others. It might feel tough to give up some of yourself, but I promise you won’t miss it in the end.
“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” Galatians 2:20
Praying for you always,
