Photography: Finding Joy Photos
I’M IN LOVE WITH THE COCO.
Ryan just rolled his eyes for sure. But actually – I’m very obsessed with all things coconut.
Coconut oil, coconut shavings, coconut water – coconut is sort of a buzzword right now in the world of basic-ness. Normally I don’t like to buy into the hype of things, but when my friend Libby (who is featured HERE and took these photos!) told me about how she uses coconut oil I was hooked. I have really dry skin and have tried dozens of moisturizers, but have never found one that works. I was complaining to Libby about it and she told me about coconut oil. She ordered a massive tub from Amazon that was super cheap and looked like it would last her for literally six months. After trying it for a week I was sold. Coconut oil moisturizes my skin like nothing I’ve used before AND it’s all natural. I apply it before I go to bed and before I put on my makeup. It doesn’t clog your pores or make you breakout which is amazing! I’ve seriously tried prescription moisturizer, really expensive moisturizer, and everything in between and nothing works like coconut oil. I’ve been seeing the same dermatologist since I was really young – I had really bad acne, had to use Accutane, and was on prescription pills for years after that. I still use Proactiv for the occasional flare up. So basically I’ve gained a lot of unwanted experience with having less than perfect skin over the years.
Coconut oil lovers out there have mentioned using the oil for other cool purposes – sun protection, insect repellant, decreasing wrinkles, infections, a deep cleanser, and a makeup remover. I’ve used coconut oil for post-sunburn repair and it worked perfectly.
Besides loving coconut oil for my skin, I’ve started using other coconut products like coconut shavings and coconut water. I put a handful of coconut shavings in my yogurt everyday and it’s so yummy. You can get a giant bag of the shavings for like .35 cents at Whole Foods. The only thing I’m not on board with is pure coconut water – I think it’s a little too natural and unflavored for me oops. I do like any sweetened coconut water (of course).
I’ve heard mixed things about eating coconut oil, I think the overall census is that it’s not actually good for you to eat. Don’t take my word on it obviously, just do some research before you start eating it!
I use the Shea Moisture brand, but only because that’s the only kind I could find at Target. I know you can get it cheaper on Amazon. Try it out and let me know the results!
