Can we just be real for a minute and admit that the world is in total chaos right now?
Twitter is THE saddest and meanest place on the internet and a powerful hub of hateful trolls, political tension is at a massive, global level, and a large chunk of humans actually believe that racism ISN’T a problem in society today.
I won’t rant about it this, but how the nation responded to the eclipse was one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen in a long time. For that moment the whole nation was in awe of God’s creation whether they knew it or not. These moments are unfortunately rare and can obviously only be curated by God. Our minds, inboxes, and social feeds are flooded with endless input – and so much of it negative or unnecessary.
It seems like that the only solution to the chaos is to escape it – to have a social, political, and technological detox and go completely off the grid. While that may be a solution to the chaos, it’s not a solution for the chaos. To be honest, it’s actually the opposite of what we’re called to do:
“You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” (HCHB) Matthew 5:14 – 16
We don’t have the option of going off the grid and abandoning society when things get tough. We don’t get to be neutral, silent, or still.
We have only one choice: to respond to the chaos with the grace and love of God.
The truth is – the world has always been like this and it’s never going to fully get better. It’s never going to be peaceful. We are innately unable to keep harmony and peace with one another. Technology is only going to get smarter and information is going to somehow become faster and more available by the day.
The only thing we can control is how we treat others. When they have opposite views and blast them all over Facebook. When you see parents raising their children to be racist. When you’re made fun of for abstaining from certain activities. When it seems like the whole world has lost sight of Jesus.
We can control if we point people to Jesus or not. If we choose to show grace or not. If we choose to genuinely love people or not. We can control if we fight for the Gospel everyday or not.
Our only option is to devote our lives – yes devote our lives – to loving others like Jesus would if He were physically on earth today. The church gets so hung up on political sides and legalism that we forget the whole point of why we’re here.
So I’m going to ask you – what matters more to you: letting the world know your stance on every political and social issue or the gospel? Letting the world know that you’re the most educated and most informed or Jesus?
I’m going to choose grace and love. I’m going to do everything I can to make the name of Jesus known. I’m going to fiercely love people of every age, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic group. I’m going to love the people who have the opposite views of me – the ones who shout them from the rooftops and who hate me for having mine.
I’m going to stay informed, I’m not going to hide under privilege, and and I’m certainly not going to hide under religion.
I’m choosing Jesus and keeping my eyes on Heaven while working my butt off on earth.
Anyone with me?
